Onboarding Open Source Contributors: Frame of mind and inclusion

Anna Iosif    Romina Suarez

Attracting, retaining and providing value for contributors is essential to a successful open source project. But like with any kind of people management, finding the ways to communicate, include and support is tricky.

Especially when you’re managing across time-zones, skill level, competition for popular tickets/issues, impostor syndrome, language barriers and cultural differences. All while maintaining your own workload and organisational flow.

Taking best practice from our work with Google Summer of Code, Outreachy and 10 years of engaging with open source contributors we’ll offer tips and best practice to engaging with an open source project from a contributor point of view and also how organisations can better their work with contributors.
