How Developers Self-sabotage Their Learning (and what to do instead)

Tori Hall

Brown bags. Hackathons. Even conferences like this one! Technologists today are facing constant pressure to stay apprised of the latest technology trends, which are moving faster than ever before. Yet once you’re in the training room, are you making the most of it?

As a lead technical trainer, I find that most developers are unintentionally undermining their own study with behaviors (though innocent and often subtle) that have a massive impact on their ability to learn. In this session, I’ll introduce you to those behaviors and offer strategies to avoid them. With this new perspective, you’ll be able to get the best return on your investment into training, networking, and learning at All Things Open and beyond.

After this session, you will have learned:

  • The three main behaviors that sabotage a learning opportunity
  • How to tell when you are engaging in one of these behaviors
  • Alternatives and strategies to avoid self-sabotage and make the most of a training occasion
