Building your own Open-source Voice Assistant

Wes Widner

Voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Dot are fun to play with and offer many features. Shortly after investing in a few voice assistants of my own I wondered what it would take to build my own. I’ve always found that building something of my own expands my understanding and stretches my skillset.

Join me as we build a simple voice assistant on a Raspberry Pi step-by-step.

In addition to describing the hardware, we’ll spend most of our time talking about software components that make up a voice assistant. The bulk of these software components will be centered on training models for wake words or triggers, performing voice to text, and extracting meaning and intent from text.

As a bonus, I’ll introduce you to a unique project designed to make voice assistants safer by allowing you to use a custom wake word for your device.
